Larry took me out last night to cheer me up (I have some major family issues going on now, including a "father" who has vanished from the face of the earth and never called me). We went out for four hours, he had three drinks, I had two PLUS we were drinking water and ate, and all of a sudden we both got dizzy, stumbling, sick, and our wine rep friend, who had not been drinking at all drove us home (we had walked to a bistro around the corner from our home).

I was sick all day, and I've had someone do this to me before, and it felt the same way. Larry fell, doesn't remember anything but apparently fell down the stairs and woke up literally screaming in unbearable pain. He is NOT a pain wimp. I don't remember him falling either, and I must have also because I have bruises everywhere and a big lump on my ankle and bruised feet. We finally got to the ER tonight. He has two broken ribs, and I have to watch him for sign of pneumonia.

The moral of the story people; don't EVER let a drink sit unguarded on even the nicest of bars, and watch who is making your drink and what they are doing to it. The ER docs said it sounded like either GHB or roophies, and they see it from time to time, but at the length of time that had passed, there was no way to determine from blood tests.

I don't know why anyone would try to do this to both of us. I know why some sick men do this to women, but all I can think is that because we were nicely dressed they though they would roll us or something.

Poor Larry. I've had cracked ribs before (in fact recently from the car accident) so broken ones must feel even worse. Sad

This seemed like such a nice place, too. There was a blues band and a nice menu, and it seemed upscale. The people seemed nice and friendly.

Watch yourself wherever you are. I think I want to invent a locking device to put on drink glasses or something. Or a GHB/roophie testing kit, like a strip that you can stick in your drinks.

Be careful, especially when going out by yourself.

We're lucky our friend, Greg the wine rep was there. We owe him big time.

Shocked scary is right.

this is the second time this happened to you? Shocked did anyone else in the restaurant get sick?

glad you had a trustworthy friend with you. broken ribs would suck. his surgery was not that long ago either!

i would really want to find out who the bleep is responsible for this Mad but i guess that would be next to impossible.

hope you both feel better soon.

I don't know if it has a video camera or not, but I plan on finding that out. That is a very good idea.

The only thing we drank in common was 2 bottles of water and 2 espresso martinis. I can't, and don't drink a lot any more, but Larry can hold his alcohol well, as a result of wine-tasting, etc. The day of our wedding we were partying all day and he wasn' this bad. He doesn't even remember falling.

I had this happen to me, when I was alone at a resort in Islamorada, sunbathing, and had about half a drink and then just blacked out but managed to make it home.

My friend Bobby had someone spike one of his drinks once in Columbus, back in the day when I was single and going out to bars. We were at a club (Predominately gay men and straight women dance-type place) and ended up taking him to the ER where they were able to determine it was Roophinol (sp?). He was sick as a dog. I figured some guy was trying to knock him out and take him home (he is a very handsome man). I don't understand why they couldn't test for it here.

I am still weak, but deeling better, but poor Larry is in a lot of pain (and considering what he went through with his hips for so long, he is NOT a pain wimp).

The only reason I can think that someone would try to do this do both of us is that we were dressed up and maybe they thought we had money (yea right, not after moving!) Neutral and thought they could roll us for our wallets/my jewelry, whatever.

I mean, I KNOW why some people do this to men/women, etc, and used to be very careful when I was single and out in the club scene back in Ohio. (Same with the resort in Islamorada; people were always trying to hit on women regardless of the ring on your finger. ) But this was a nice bistro! An establishment where there were a lot of couples/groups of people our age, from what I remember. A date night sort of place.

I think I want to give up on people sometimes. I hate to lose faith in people, but it's hard.

Thanks for the advice and being so sweet.

Case in point as to why I'll only drink beer when I go out. I have a problem with mixed drinks and people mixing them for me.

RR, I've heard that both rohynol and GHB are tasteless, colorless, and odor-free. Supposedly. So this is new. Maybe with the flavor of the espresso martini we missed it? I learned a lot about these substances after what happened to my friend Bobby in Columbus, but apparently not enough to prevent happened in the Keys when we first moved, or enough to stop what occurred on Friday evening.

When I was single and going out with friends, years ago, we'd all watch each other's drinks and not drink anything left alone, or in the case of bottled water, unsealed, after what happened to Bobby.

What happened to me in the Keys was odd too; it was at Cheeca Resort, which is supposed to be very chi-chi (in fact, to inject some humor into this, the women that were there when I was were VERY Talbot-shopping-looking Razz and all that crap.) I was on the cell phone with one of my friends/former co-workers in Ohio, had had half a rum-runner and about three bottles of water, and all of a sudden I got dizzy. I was on in-line skates (the resort was about 1/2 mile from our house) and thankfully Larry was at home and found me hanging on to the mailbox. He got me in the house and I slept for about 12 hours and woke up and got sick (yakking) all day. That's what this felt like to a milder degree. It was still bad though.

The reaction that Bobby experienced at the club in Ohio was worse.
I took him home the night it happened but then the next AM got him to the ER at OSU.
He was yakking but also freaking out and yelling and scared. The hospital gave him about 4 bags of liquid IV and a sedative/anti-vomiting medication called Phenergan. It seemed to help, and at the OSU hospital they explained that since it's a street drug of sorts, there is no way to tell how much is ingested and that depending on the concentration, you can pass out and feel like a mild flu or it can be as strong as to cause a coma-like state.

Either way, I took Akern's advice and am waiting to hear back from the manager. The bartender who served us told our friend he thought something was wrong. His quote was "They didn't drink very much at all, and they ate, and all of a sudden they just were like wasted, man." Great. At least the wine rep frined of ours is cool. I am going to cook him my extra special chicken cacciatore as thanks.

You still need to watch ANYTHING you drink when you go out. It could have been slipped into the bottled water we poured into glasses Just don't leave even a diet coke or glass of water or anything at all unattended. I though that since we were out of the Keys and I have long been out of the club-type scenes that everything would be OK.

Larry says we are taking our own coasters everywhere we go, and no matter what we drink, be it wine, cocktails (and in my case, mostly water), one of us will cover the glasses with the coasters and make certain that
1) neither of us leave the table at the same time
2) we watch everything anyone does to anything we drink
3) we keep our drinks covered with coasters and make sure they have not been moved
or 4) we only go to the club where Larry works. That would suck rocks because you have to dress to the nines and once in a while it's nice to just go out to here a nice gritty blues band.

I can't even drink much alcohol anymore, and for all I know it could have been the bottled water.

Greg said that there was some freaky guy sitting next to us to whom we were speaking, whom I do not remember but Larry does a little. The only thing we drank in common were an espresso martini each, at the same time, and bottled water. I had one glass of champagne before that and Larry had two Belvedere martinis. Again, this was over a fout hour period where we also ate two fat orders of fried oysters, baked brie, and chicken satay skewers.

I want to make friends here so badly. I haven't met anyone other than Larry's boss and co-managers and the realtor and while they are all very nice, it's kind of hard to socialize a lot with your husband's co-workers and the realtor would be much more interested if I was single. I just want to meet some nice people. I can't just go to the club and have cocktails without being dressed up, and it's apparently not appropriate for the employees/spouses to hang out with the members anyway.

I am trying my best to say and do positive things all day and meet nice, normal people, but it is difficult. I'll do it though. Maybe I will start going to church.
