Posted: 08/26/04 - 16:08 Post subject: Anthem Controversy?
Just read this kinda serious, kinda tongue-in-cheek article about the version of the Star Spangled Banner being played at the Olympics.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5823827/
First time we heard it I remarked to G3 that I thought it was pretty moving. Didn't realize it would be controversial.
What do you all think?

All the matters to me, is they don't change the lyrics.
The land of the free, and the home of the brave, means so much, and sums up this great nation pretty darn well

I thought it sounded great in the first place. I can't understand how a musical piece can sound jingoistic. It reminds me of descriptions of wine. "Pretentious, with a hint of melancholy."

That was my thought too. I guess the musicologist or purist there is a proper way for it to be played, but I just like hearing it, no matter what.

I didn't know there was a controversy. I think the version played at the Olympics sounds beautiful.
But i'm a sucker for the anthem, anyways.

The high school I went to played the national anthem every morning. To change it up a bit they would play various versions, whoever sang at the Super Bowl, etc. There was one version that was probably just another record the office staff owned but it was truly awful, weird gonging in the back and the vocalist sounded like some monk trying to do Garth Brooks. Bad combo. I'm no musicologist (but I do play one on the internet) but there are good and bad versions that even us lay-people can tell. Contrast the Benedictine Garth with say Whitney Houston's and there is no contest. However, I will say I really like the 'Olympic version' of the national anthem this year, in fact my family and I were just talking about how pretty it is. I think people are looking for stuff to complain about.
