Here's the verdict: For the minority of you who picked "the same", you are CORRECT!!! I'm surprised that no one picked the first answer b/c that seems like the most obvious one. The reason why the water level is the same is b/c the volume of water displaced by the ice cube is equal to the ice cube itself. The ice cube therefore creates a depression on the water surface on which it sits. The depression is equal to the volume of the ice cube. When the ice melts, the "hole" gets filled up gradually with liquid water until it is full (ice is completely melted and is replaced by an volume of liquid water identical to that of the ice so no change in water level results)

even though I couldn't explain why and when I read TriBob's response that almost made sense I almost rethought my answer...

I beg do differ. When water freezes, its volume increases by 9%. therefore when ice melts the molecules will take up less space displacing less water then when in solid form.
See: Which is more dense - Ice or Liquid Water?

I'm with Tribob. Water expands as it freezes there it would decrease in volume when it melts.
By the way this is why rocks will explode in the winter time if they have water trapped inside them.

I'm referring to the overall water level in the glass- whether or not it stays the same or fluctuates when the ice melts into liquid water.
