repair on my 97 Dakota. Water pump replacement = total cost of about $73 whereas I'm guessing $300 min at a repair shop. My 16 yr old assistant helped with the installation tonight and performed his tasks well. He figured the serpentine belt and the shroud installation out w/o any help from the old man. He also learned why mechanics always have busted up knuckles.

1 Dodge water pump = $73
Having your old man teach you how to fix stuff yourself (thereby not leaving you at the mercy of repair guys) = priceless

Yeah, cool. Car repairs are costly if you have to take it to a professional.

I think the last time I replaced a water pump, it was about $15 for the part and 11ty billion swear words before I got it installed.

Alright !! I taught my kids a few things but not as elaborate as that.
Rock: In an effort to eliminate parts on engines, manufacturers have replaced all the various belts with just one long snaky belt that turns ALL the things that need turning in an engine.
Since the belt "snakes" through the engine its called a "serpentine" belt.
ser·pen·tine (sūrpn-tn, -tn)
adj.
1. Of or resembling a serpent, as in form or movement; sinuous.
[Middle English, from Old French serpentin, from Late Latin serpentnus, from Latin serpns, serpent-, serpent; see serpent.]
