The old Dodge is again roadworthy. And an adventure it was... I don't recommend installing a new differential into a vehicle for the home mechanic who is easily frustrated. I had it in the axle housing and then back out at least three times before I got everything shimmed correctly. One dumb mistake wasted a $22 bearing but overall I believe I saved well over $500 in labor costs.

Excellent work, Rob!! Definitely take the rest of the day to slug and drink some beer.....I miss the days when my dad the mechanic used to do all my maintenance work for just the cost of the parts.....and maybe a pizza and beer

I HATE jobs like that! If I can't get the part on right the first time, I get frustrated really quickly.

Good for you Rob! I hear ya. I have a seized brake drum on my project car and am as frustrated as all get out trying to get the dang thing off.

This is so cool! Nothing better than getting in and fixing your car yourself. I love that feeling.
New cars make me our engine has a plate bolted down covering most of it--probably insuring that we can't get into it. We can access anything in our old Nissan though. They put the fuel filter under the back seat--that's a bear to change. (Nothing like Rob's repair job though--I am impressed!!)

jrjo, did ya back off the adjuster first? If ya did, I guess it is time for the 3-4 finger gear puller.
If ya still have trouble, gime a call, and I will be over with my big crowbar...then stand back

the gear puller and a large hammer will work any brake drum into submission.... a little bit of heat from a propane torch won't hurt matters either.

Awwwww.... I NEVER get to have fun anymore *sniff*
Ever since that time I ripped the treads off that T-55 Russian tank....no one lets me play with my crowbar anymore...*sniff*
People have such long memories....

Thanks guys... I'll try the 'heat & beat'. And then have to search out a puller. The local parts store didn't have a puller, prob have to order online.

Way to go Rob! I have a feeling Keith is going to have to do some work to his car soon. He's talking transmission rebuilding.

Nope, nothing thrown thru window or smashed to bits. Some colorful language on occasion. And I never even drew blood by whacking my hand on something sharp although I did pull a couple of metal splinters out of my fingers.
It operated great. No clunking noise when shifting from reverse to forward or vise verssa, no road noise at all. Actually worked the way it was supposed to work .

Good job, Rob! And most impressive! Cars, and their parts just elude me.
