How much does it suck when you know you're not going to procreate any more to have to put up with this crap monthly for another 20+ (or however long it is) years?!
A lot.
I am sick of mess, cramps, irritablity, sobbing during commericals with kids or puppies in them, and the basic inconvenience of it all.
If I had my choice I'd get rid of it all. But then you gotta deal with hormonal issues, right?

Personally, I can't wait to get on the new pill, the one that makes that special time only 4 times a year. (seasonall, I think is the name)

I have friends whose doctors have told them they can do that with no worries on the regular pill by skipping the placebo week. 2 friends with endometriosis, one who was told by her doctor to 'rig' her current pill so she doesn't have the placebo week ever (except when monitored, she's got it bad), and the other rigs her pill so she only has it once every 3 months. I have yet another friend with no problems and her doctor told her that every three months is fine, that the RX people arbitrarily picked 28 days when they created the pill, although I'm thinking naturally most people probably wouldn't go more than 40...so it doesn't make complete sense to me yet but the idea sounds interesting.
Thats what I heard anyway. Do not try this without consulting your physician first....just felt I should add a disclaimer for some reason....

That would seem a really good solution, but I am a trainwreck on The Pill. I am incredibly emotional, argumentative, mean, bloated, I gain tons of weight, and I have back and leg pain from it.
I am just getting over a particularly lovely set of chainsaw cramps. I feel so great! Think I'll go run a half!

I am by no means an expert on pregnancy, birth control, etc., but I've been having a good experience with an oral contraceptive called Yasmin. I saw a pamphlet for in my OB/GYN's office and he said he'd had several of his patients switch to it.
Granted, I've not consistently had killer cramps or major PMS since I was in my early twenties, but I've experienced bloating. Yasmin does something to eliminate (for me, anyway) the bloat. From the Yasmin website: "...can reduce excess sodium and water in your body, which may increase potassium - therefore women with kidney, liver or adrenal disease should not take YASMIN."
I'd been on Ortho-Tricyclin for years before and definitely felt "cyclical" changes -- with Yasmin, I feel the same month-round. I've thought about tinkering with my pills so I can skip periods, but they're usually only two days long (if I have one at all) and with only mild cramping. If anything, my lower digestive system (and IBS) is the part most affected by my periods.
Sorry for the long post, just thought I'd pass along what I knew about this pill in case anyone is interested.

i do the "skip the placebo week" thing and have for about two yrs... the only 'problem' i have is that when i do cycle, it is heavier and lasts longer than i would if i were taking the pill the right way.
the only other issue i have with the pill is that it affects other aspects of my life... but usually starting a different brand of pill fixes that.

I was also told that a magical number for women is age 30. That's when another huge hormonal shift occurs in the body and things start changing drastically. Either for better or worse.

I'm with you Laur, on the pill thing......I had a horrible experience with them for years, since I was taking them mainly to suppress cysts, but the weight gain and severe depression were just unbearable and not worth the convenience of reduced monthly nuisance. I felt better within weeks of coming off it and will never do that again. I'll gladly suffer what I go through every month, knowing it's only the first day or two that are bad plus the PMS, rather than feel PMS-y all month long.
Seriously, anyone who's on the Pill and is also suffering from depression, there is a very real connection there. I have a good article on this somewhere if anyone wants it. Mine was really bad for years and nothing seemed to help it til I went off. Part of it is depletion of B vitamins but there's also something else hormonal and I can't remember what it is, that causes the depression. Not worth it for me.
