Posted: 11/03/03 - 14:48 Post subject: Another NYC Marathon Report
I did it! My first marathon!!! And I feel GREAT!
I took the NYRR Foundation bus (which is a "late" bus that doesn't leave Manhattan until 8 am). I thought this would be a good thing, since I wouldn't have to wake up at 5 am like everyone else. But then we got stuck in traffic...yadayadayada, we didn't get to the start area until 9:50 (gun time was at 10:10). I was a big ball of stress, and I ended up running to the wrong corral...woops...I finally found my way back to the green start & lined up. It took me about 10 minutes to get to the start, but since we took the lower deck of the Verrazzano, the first mile wasn't very crowded at all. I ended up doing the first mile in about 9:50, the second in 8:34. These were the only splits I hit all day.
I was starting to stress out because after mile 2 I was missing all my splits from the bottlenecks created from the water stations. After the first 10K, though, I just tore off my pace band, & just told myself to enjoy the day & the crowds. I'm sooo glad I made that decision! I had the best time of my life! Although I didn't break 4:00 like I wanted to (chip time 4:24:06), I wouldn't change a thing. I'll never again run my first marathon, so I'm happy I got to enjoy it. The crowds really are amazing!
I got really emotional starting at mile 20, and would get all choked up...I started crying a few times. The spectators just kept telling me what a great job I was doing & to stay strong. It was touching since I was pretty tired at that point, but I wish I could've just told them that I was crying out of pure joy.
I can't say enough how wonderful that experience was. I can't wait till next year! I'll see you there, Elkid!

Great Job, sorry we didn't get a chance to meet up.
Did you get goosebumps coming off the 59th street bridge too?
Future reference. At the water stops, run in the middle until the last table. Everyone runs to the first tables causing many bottlenecks.
Congrats on your first (Last years NYCM was my first).
I have since run two more Marathons and I am running my 4th in (gulp) 12 days...
It's an addicition!

Great Job!
I am doing my second one ever in 6 weeks and I am really looking forward to it. I want to do a mega marathon with lots of runners but then I hear those stories so I get worried about how I would do with the crowds.

Dude, you would do great. Everyone has too experience, at least once in their life, the roar of the crowd as you enter Manhattan from the 59th street bridge. I truly got goosebumps. You do the big marathon for the thrill, you do the small ones for the race.

Very, very cool! I'm so glad you did so well and had a great time. Very smart to forget the watch and enjoy the experience.
My first is next month. I already told my running partner to expect tears for the same reason you mentioned.
Congrats!!!!

Great job, so many people forget to enjoy themselves, especially on their first.
