Posted: 10/16/03 - 12:25 Post subject: And that is the sound of ultimate suffering
When i got the mail last night i saw that there was a bill for my student loan. Not too suprising, i get it every month (and will until i'm 42). I open it and look at the amount due:
$369.57
Gaaah!!
Wha?
After i stop gasping for air, i think that maybe both of my loan bills were finally combined into one master bill. Nope. Then i see it
"Amount overdue: 179.19"
Gaaah!!
Wha?
Overdue, nothing. Then i open the next thing from Iowa Student Loan. It's a letter informing me that my bill is 10 days overdue and that i must call immediately to resolve this situation. I immediately call the number on the letter and we chat for a while.
Here's the conclusion/solution:
While i did in fact mail out a payment, ISL never got the payment. Since i paid via money order and do not have the receipt for that money order, they sympathize but still require payment. It is now 13 days over due and in another 17 they will call a credit agency. So, regardless of that fact that i paid the bill, i have to pay it again. I have the money, but it's a bit of a hit right now.
So, in conclusion:
Gaaah!!

Man, that sucks lemons!!!! I hate when crap like that happens!! I hope they get the money!
The sound of suffering at our house: we just got the approximate amount my son's braces are going to cost.
Gaaah was all I said for days.

File a complaint with the Post Master General!
If you file a formal complaint with the Post Master Generals Office (NOT your local post master), they MUST investigate it. Your local post office and everyone else in the Postal chain, down to the intended recipiant, will get a looking at.
I have had to do this before.
Hope it helps!

Also if you used a money order there should be a record of it. Call where you got your money order and see if they have a copy. Do you know the date you purchased it on?

PUG!! Hold up, where did you purchase the money order? If it's a Postal Service Money order or a chain like CVS or something they can look it up, cancel the old one out, and issue you another!!
Don't just count that $$ lost, yet! This has happened to me before.

Was it an American Express money order? Sometimes those have a trail, too.

Pay your bills online. Much easier, and a definite trail exists.

So do cancelled checks, the proof of payment is much plainer than a copy of a confirmation.

You still have to worry if the USPS gets it there, which was the root of the original problem here. Don't forget you get another confirmation: an actual deduction from your checking account or a charge on your credit card. I pay all of my bills online - 100%. Since I switched to e-billing life has been much simpler.

The problem being that i picked it up from Cub foods, i don't remember the date and i don't have the receipt anymore. I believe that i got the money order for $200, but i'm not positive anymore.

I might have to do this one, though. I just wish i had more facts than i remember paying it.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys and gals.

and why pay the full $369.57???
as one who has recieved phone calls as well as letters a first contact is not a real big deal. Make one payment (not both) because if the other eventually shows up it won't count as a monthly payment, but merely an additional payment. It may even take the full amount off the principal, which isn't a bad thing, but they'll still try to make you pay another monthly payment. making 1 payment now gets you out of delinquency and gives the USPS another 30 days to get that original mail order delivered to them. and buys you some more time to find out what happened.
