Posted: 04/26/06 - 14:24 Post subject: An official diagnosis today for Abby
Today I met with her school team and was working on Abby's kindergarten placement for next year. The school district found that they cannot accomadate Abby's complex medical, social and mental needs so they will be sending her to a special school outside of the district. The two school psychologists kept using "nice words" like gross deveolpmental delay and significant development delay and I was smiling when they said that. When I pushed them for a diagnosis, "really" they repeated themselves. I finally asked, is Abby mentally retarded, I don't care about nice sounding words and political correct speak, both of them said, yes, Abby is mentally retarded. I said, good, that is all I want to know.
So we have known for quite some time that Abby was MR, but now it is official and Robin and I are actually pleased. It opens up a whole new availability of services that could only help her.
So at least we have one questioned answered. Only about 99 more to go.

It takes a special person... You are that person. She is such a blessing to you and your family.
I could never do it. You are so much stronger than I.
Hang in there and thanks for sharing her with us!

Good for you Joe! There are so many parents who allow their children to flounder in the classroom because they don't even want a diagnostic test done to find out if there is a problem. The educational trend we're facing because of recent court rulings is "inclusion" in the regular classroom. I know that you want all the best for you kids, especially Abby; my brother fights to keep his autistic son in a special school because it benefits my nephew more than being "included" in a regular classroom ever could. But the majority of parents whose children have special needs don't want to be reminded that their child is different. Unfortunately, those kids fail to achieve all that they can, because they struggle so much in the classroom. I'd want to take advantage of all the experts that I could, for the benefit of the child. I see you doing that. Keep pushing for it!

I know your heart Joe, as a friend, as a LEO, as a Teacher and as a dedicated Parent.
You and Robin are awesome parents.

Joe, you guys are lucky to live where you do. There really are tons of resources available for Abby now....and as far as the diagnostic, consider it a ticket for those services and nothing more. She's still our sweet Abby and no label will ever change that!
