Have you noticed that people don't like listining to each other.
Except for gossip. You see, listining is difficult.
Now eavesdropping and overhearing: these things are FREE, EXCITING and lots of FUN, and therefore more popular than LISTINING.

Very interesting, but also sadly accurate. Listening requires you to take yourself out of the equation and give the floor to someone else, and a lot of people have a tough time doing that, separating out their own stuff and giving you their undivided attention. Plus, you might hear something about yourself that you don't want to hear. Gossip, on the other hand, is usually good juicy stuff and that could be why it's so much more attractive.
But do spill, I can sense there's a story here somewhere.....

I like listening to certain people. Some people can amuse me with their stories.

:uno: Selective listening is best. Keeps the blood pressure down.

I can be out in a crowd and pretty much hear most of the conversations around me and be able to recite what the person with me is saying.. let's just say a lot of experience in hearing lots of people talk and learning to always keep an ear open for what is happening around.

They probably listen to those they love.
A lot of people like to interact, but want to do all the talking.
To be a good listener you have to be
a.) basically interested in your fellow humans and therefore genuinely care what they have to say
b.) not interested in the human that's talking, but what they're saying affects or will affect you
c.) only appear to be a good listener because you are outwardly quiet (inside you are thinking 'what is he/she blabbering on about all this time?' OR 'how could you have a piece of food that large stuck in your teeth and not feel it?!')

I think to be a good listener, you need to not only be interested in what is being said, but also be analyzing it too to think of questions and clarifications needed to expand the conversation. Keeping the speaker focused on whatever they are explaining and getting them to expand and go in depth is how I find the best way to listen. As soon as your mind turns the conversation to yourself and you start to construct a reply to speak of a story about yourself or your own experience, you've just checked out of listening and gone into "pre"speaking. IMHO, listening really means keeping any focus off yourself and all of it on the speaker, both verbally and mentally.
