Background-
During the Civil War a regiment from Minnesota captured a flag (the regimental battle flag) of a Virginia Regiment.
The state of Virginia want the flag back. Minnesota says no.
The attorney General of MN said that the state is not compelled to send it back.
The VA Senate passed a resolution demanding the flag back.
Jesse Ventura said "we won, to the victors go the spoils"
Question-
Who "owns" history.
Who should keep the flag.
Play nice everyone.

Even without Jesse as governor anymore, the bumper sticker still lives on...

Another related interesting question is the flag issue. The ideas around history being offensive and thus we shouldn't be reminded of it b/c if we put a flag up or a statue of some slave owner or whatever, we're somehow glorifying it. Not all our history is pretty.
I think it comes down to what the particular symbol means to you. If the flag or statue or whatever the symbol is is something to respect, then the history that goes with it is also to be respected. But if one doesn't respect the symbol as anything more than a symbol, then the history is just the past, for good or ill.
My own thought is that it's important to remember where we came from, because if we forget it, we're bound to repeat it. I think you can have pride in the past w/o all of it being beautiful.
I don't think MN played a huge part in the Civil War, whereas VA did so I think they should get it back.

Melessia I say those troops who captured that flag that was a big deal to them.
Capturing the flag (and losing it) were some of the biggest things to do during the CW. It was the highest honor to be the regimental flag bearer also.
It is not about the bigger part the "side" played. I do understand your argument and it is an excellent agrument also. Taking away though soliders "contribution" though does them a dis-service.

I think history has shown that MN captured the flag during a war, and therefore it belongs to them. If MN chooses to give it back, fine, but it's theirs to give, not VA to take.

I do believe that flag was later taken down to Hazzard County, so this argument is moot.

MN contributed somewhere between 5000-9000 men while the state only had a population of 175,000. This is a pretty good percentage of men being sent off to war.
Anyway it was captured in battle and the soldiers and now the state of MN should be able to keep it.
I would think this is probably a regimental or company type flag and not the Stars and Bars- so they "offensive" feel for it should not be prevalent.
I doubt that the English have returned any of Napoleon's flags and the same goes throughout history.
