Posted: 03/28/04 - 20:26 Post subject: An impromptu 5K with thegman
I didn't know if I was going to be able to make it to this 5K that thegman invited me to run, so I didn't take any time away from my regular training schedule. I didn't know what to expect since I ran 10 miles this morning.
Hottest day of the year. It had to hit +80°F at the 3PM race start, a lot warmer than I wanted it to be. WE HAD THE BESTEST RACE START EVAH! Everyone lined up and the RD told all the slower people to move to the back and the front line was still all kids. When everyone was in place, the RD had all the adults move forward about two yards and had the kids stay back at the original starting line.
Race was pretty flat, just a couple of little inclines. 1st mile clicked off at 6:11 and I felt strong (which surprised me). I knew I was in forth place because the race had a bunch of turn arounds and it was easy to keep an eye on the leaders. 2nd mile was about 30 seconds slower than the 1st (not surprising). Somewhere in the 3rd mile, the heat started to catch up to me. I slowed just a hair to catch my breath and by that time, it was time to scoot on in to the finish line.
Clock time was right at 20:00 (6:26 pace).
4th place over all and 2nd in my age group.
Not a PR, but not too far from a PR and considering the week that I had, I now know I'm in shape to run a PR with a decent taper.
I got to meeet thegman, Mrs. g-man and his two boys.
Nice little race and the t-shirt (courtesy of g-man) was a tie-dye.

It was a great afternoon, but for the really really long award presentation afterwards.
PH ran a great race. Nothing like a 10 mile warm up in the a.m. before running a 6:30 pace in a 5K in the heat of the day. He's fun to watch, and a nice guy to boot.
I had low expectations today with all of my knee/foot maladies of late. Fortunately, I only battled cramps, and nothing else. No knee or foot pain post race or tonight.
My first mile paced a lot faster than I intended at 7:44. I slowed my pace and pulled a 8:40 mile 2. Cramps struck my right leg at about 2.25 and again a half mile later. My last 1.1 went a 9:33, for a super craptastic 25:57 finish. A PR was not in jeopardy whatsoever today.
It was a successful day if I wake up tomorrow without pain in my foot or knee, though.

That must be the new training method. The guy who came in 5th in the 10k ran 13 in the morning because he wanted to practice a strong finish.

PH...I don't know how you ran that race like you did with your 10 miler that morning.
Great job...loved the story about those fast kids wanting to start the race.
gman...your times look great all things considered.
When dealing with any kind of maladies...it puts a damper on things.
I think you did great!
Nice Job Guys!
