I found this tonight.

http://www.deadwoodmickelsontrailmarathon.com/

It takes place on June 8th, it's in the Black Hills, so it shouldn't be too hot, it's only been run once previous, this is the second edition.

I was thinking about running Mount Rushmore in October, but I'm thinking this one looks promising.

Anyone else?

Coach, I'd definitely be tempted if I hadn't committed to a race that weekend already. I see there's a halfM in '03 and that trail looks spectacular.
Tell us some more about the Rushmore marathon in Oct.. you still leaning towards that one?

yes, I am.

The race is mostly downhill. They start you out of town up in the black hills (nowhere near Mt. Rushmore btw), and you make a beautiful run through the black hills. The scenery is pretty awesome. There are not a ton of spectators, however, and traffic does go by for most of the race.

However, since you do run on the highway, your family and friends are able to drive ahead and cheer for you every couple of miles. This is a really nice benefit, in my opinion. It's nice having alot of fans to cheer, but it meant more to me when they were actually cheering for me, not some generic runner.

Around mile 20 there is a major downhill that goes on for about 2 miles. It's a killer, when you make it to the bottom of that hill you run on a flat surface about the remaining 4 miles within Rapid City.

I have heard different stories from different runners about Mount Rushmore. Some people say it's the fastest marathon they've ever run(all the downhill), and some people say it's the hardest marathon that they have ever run. I personally ran my fastest time there, so I liked it.

hopefully this helps!

coach---I'd definitely be interested in some info regarding area races this summer---preferable less than a 'thon.....although I "might" consider. Been promising the boys a trip out that way.
