We just caught the news on Fox. My husband was in tears. He loved Ronald Reagan. He was in the Army during President Reagan's Administration, and it was quite a different army than the Carter era.
My husband has said, on more than one occasion, if Reagan had wanted to stage a coup and take the country, the military would have supported him, the military loved him that much.

I had seen earlier on CNN that he contracted Pneumonia, and his family was at his side.
Perhaps the greatest President this country has ever had.

The saddest thing of all was that his family....and our country, lost a great man long before today. Alzheimer's is such an evil disease.
RIP, Ronnie....you fought a gallant fight to the end and replacing you will be impossible.
Too bad our friends at CR can't have the same respect.
Don't go over there unless you really wanna get pissed off. It's not pretty.

It is definitely a sad day, but I am confident he is in a better place. Politics aside, I hate to lose any of our Presidents.
He was a fantastic communicator, and no matter what, he made me believe the world was a better place, and that all was right with the world. The man was charming, and no offense to any current or past president, he defined Presidential to me.

Alzheimer's is a horrible disease that is ripping through my family, I guess this is why this is so upsetting to me, as I was far to young to understand his politics when he was in office.
Funny story, when he was up for re-election in '84, I was only 6 and rationalized that it must be really really hard to run the country, so hard in fact that no one would want to do it twice in a row, so I told my parents not to vote for him because he must be tired. I really felt sorry for him when he was re-elected, as though another term was his prison sentence or something...my mom just couldn't get through to me that he wanted it...

I was researching Alzheimer's and medications just a few monthes ago for a friend, and was realizing what a devasting disease it was. That the President lived ten years is really incredible. That is a long time to live with Alzheimer's Disease.

i just heard about it (at 10 pm). ive been at the pool all day. i feel like i missed a major world event. well, i guess i did....
like cheryl, im too young to understand any of the politics, but for whatever reason, i always remember of thinking of him as a really "good" person and not a "bad" person like the last three presidents....

There are times to play politics. There are times to be respectful of those who have died.
I am a firm believer that you can tell an awful lot about a person's character by how they treat their foes, rather than how they treat their friends.

Very sad day. We've lost a good man.
Here are Reagan's last words expressed to the American People when he announced that he had Alzheimer's Disease. He always seemed to speak so eloquently and was always reassuring that things would be ok no matter how terrible things were.
| Quote: | Reagan genuinely seemed to appreciate his remarkable string of good fortune, as he indicated in his 1994 announcement. Although he was by then already severely debilitated by his illness, just five years after leaving office, Reagan wrote the announcement in longhand as a letter to the American people. It was vintage Reagan: As he worried about the impact of the disease on his wife, he also voiced his ever-present optimism.
"In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president," he wrote. "When the Lord calls me home, whenever that day may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future. I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead."
|
I hope that he's ridden into the sunset and rests in peace.
