Actually I think it depends upon the topic. Here most of the posters are Conservative (politically speaking) and are possibly more religious or are at least more aligned with religious viewpoints.
This generalization may be wrong and if so I apologize, but if it had been an ultra liberal politician who had died, it's quite possible that the situation might be reversed.
I don't belive that "disregard for humankind" is exactly what it is.
Different places, some different players, different viewpoints.
Plus I think PH keeps the reigns tighter over here.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As much as I dislike Bill Clinton, I still respect the fact that the man was the President of the United States, and would act accordingly under the current circumstances. You don't have to like the man, but the least one can do is respect the office.

And if it was "just the internet" then I'd be a huge loser for spending so much time with you people, and I refuse to consider that concept. |
Gotta disagree here just a tad. Having met runners form both CR and RR we've always left whatever our internet opinions were at home on the net. I've never even heard anyone discuss their postings. It's not unlike neighbors having vastly different opinions. We may consider each other odd, but it doesn't stop us from socializing with each other.
So from that standpoint, I do consider it just the internet. Nothing to be taken too seriously. |
Well, perhaps that is where you differ from some of us here. Some of us are more than just casual friends that have met at a race and said hi once, many of us have stayed at each other's homes, met each other's families, and in the case of the local crowd here, get together as often as we can and not just because there's a race in town. To us, it isn't just the internet andI think JJ put that very well. I personally have made some lifetime friends from both here and CR (in the past) and we've supported each other through good times and bad ones, more so than just posting platitudes on a message board.
If you don't wish to truly become a part of the community and connect with anyone here, that's certainly your option and no one will think ill of you for it. But conversely, do NOT look down on those of us who do take this more seriously than "just the internet" because of the personal connections we have made through the internet. I've met some truly amazing people whose paths I would likely have never crossed had it not been for the internet, and I wouldn't trade having those people in my life for anything. You can choose to disagree all you want, but I would ask that you show a little courtesy and respect those opinions that differ from your own on that issue.

I really do not think it matters if
1) it is ONLY the internet and
2) there are no rules of decorum.
Things to consider,
1) the man is lying in state in Washington D.C, he has not even been buried yet.
2) Flags are at 1/2 staff for a period of 30 days for mourning for the entire country. You do not have to mourn the loss but you can respect others who are.
3) Just because there are no "emily post rules" about something does not justify bad remarks.
4) We have a life time after this to debate good, bad, plus and minus. If you can't wait a week then oh well.
5) Personal feelings aside, reserve comments for a little while it just is classier and more respectful that way.
6) "just the internet" is not an excuse to hide behind. We can give our feelings, but there are times and places for that.

I won't delve into the polical issues of this thread, but I do want to share a thought I have on the "it's just the internet". Yes it is, but a bulletin board like this and CR for that matter are more than a collection of random opinions. Not only do we share this common ground of running, but as the months and years go by, friendships foster and the comaradarie becomes for many a daily part of most every day. For those meeting at races or personal messaging here, the site becomes an avenue no different than a phone call or writing someone a letter.
It's in this vain that I, and that's all I can speak for, look at posts. A flame or an insult is not "just the internet" in what I see, it's a micro-view of you as a person. How you might foster a friendship. How you might be to meet at a race. I know in my church we often talk about "witnessing". That not only applies to religious issues, but really, life in general. Whether you want to believe it or not, this forum is a form of witnessing. For many of us that aren't well travelled, a post is a little glimpse into what issues are important to people in Atlanta or New York or LA or Austin, or what teachers or policemen or programmers or lobbyists think or what life is like at the beach or in the mountains or in Manhatten. Sure we say "it's just the internet", but really, it's more. Much more. |
I know! I agree with you...but I wanted a reason to make my statement!

I haven't shown any disrespect for opinions over here. I don't have a problem with anyone's opinion one way or the other.

I'm not talking about political opinion, I'm talking about the disdainful "well, it's just the Internet" thing. If it is to you, that's fine, but not everyone shares that viewpoint.
Do you just like to argue or is there a point to all this?

And that's fine Genie. I was just explaining where I'm coming from. I don't take the comments on the internet anymore serious than people's personal opinions. I certainly did not consider the statement disdainful nor was I looking down at anyone's opinion.
I don't have any particular argument with your comments, spiteful they may be.

Well, if you can't see the connection between this and the "Where has everyone gone" threads, then there's no reason to say any more.

I can see where GARebelRunner is coming from because we have actually met before and our conversation wasn't really anything like I would have posted (or he would have posted) on the Internet. I think that once you get to know people better, though, your conversations do end up becoming exactly what you post online and friendships form from that.

Precisely my point. I spent last weekend with Keltic and RR and of course, we talked about a lot more than just Riff Raff stuff, but that was part of the conversation as well.

When we do occasionally post an MIA thread it is usually because someone notices a couple people, not "everyone" that were frequent posters for a period of time are no longer posting, and normally with few exceptions, it's for reasons like Monk just posted, they're busy and don't have time to get here and most of them do come back when they can. Rando's new job doesn't allow him the kind of time he used to nor does Shelfie's, but they pop in from time to time. Would we like to see them more? Absolutely. Will we in the future? Maybe, maybe not. But I think it's nice when people notice you've been gone, it shows you are truly a member of the community and IMHO, that is not a bad thing. People are always free to come and go as they please, and become as involved in the community as much or as little as they want to. Those who were asked to leave, well, that's something else altogether and there have only been a few of those, ALL with good reason.
And it was the same over at CR. People come and go, the "in crowd" i.e. people who post the most, changes over time, and so what? Hasn't anyone ever asked, gee, where's Gogirl been?

Maybe you should post in this forum, instead.
