Oh, that Teresa, our next First Lady. Wink

Hello, University of Calgary? Have you accepted my application to your PhD program?
You have? Great, now can you give me the number to apply for permanent citizenship?
Yes, that's right, I said permanent.

Sue's analogy is a good one, would you want someone pissing on your grave.....before you were even put in it?

Well, it's kind of like this. I don't give a rats if someone pisses on my grave, with or without me in it. I'm a simple nobody. However, if you piss on FDR's grave you might really piss off some federal agents.

Good night and pleasant dreams. Gotta get up at 4:00am for work.

Would Emily Post say that the fact that we have internet access now that it means common courtesy is void? I think a modicum of respect is due in the days immediately following anyone's death, just my opinion. Continue with your discussion.

[Random Hijack] Theresa Heinz Kerry: I've heard of people hyphenating their maiden name with their married name, but never their previous married name with their current married name. Is this odd or do I not get out much? [/hijack]

No Emily Post here but perhaps the fact that she was widowed influenced her decision to keep her first husband's name. Heck, it doesn't hurt that that name was Heinz.

But in the case of most people their death is not going to be discussed on the internet. I really think if Reagan was able to comment on these postings so soon after his death his only probable comment towards those of us who were not his fans would be, "There you go again."

It's not a matter of common courtesy. The ability to post so quickly did not exist before to most people. And the mainstream media did not in the past give a voice to anyone who had different opinions about someone's effect on their life. If upon my demise someone wishes to post comments about me, feel free. And if any of my family members come across your posts, they will be free to respond or not as they see fit. As I remember common courtesy used to be to never speak ill of the dead. We are a little bit more open society today.

"Our system freed the individual genius of man. Released him to fly as high & as far as his own talent & energy would take him. We allocate resources not by govt. decision but by the mil's. of decisions customers make when they go into the mkt. place to buy. If something seems too high-priced we buy something else. Thus resources are steered toward those things the people want most at the price they are willing to pay. It may not be a perfect system but it's better than any other that's ever been tried."

Aahhh yes, make that: I don't get out much. I didn't realize she was a widow, that makes a lot more sense.

Her husband was a Senator here in Pennsylvania. He was killed when his private plane collided with a helicopter, 25 October 2002

Don't go over there unless you really wanna get pissed off. It's not pretty.

There are times to play politics. There are times to be respectful of those who have died.

I am a firm believer that you can tell an awful lot about a person's character by how they treat their foes, rather than how they treat their friends.

Don't go over to the Clubhouse - you'll see a side of people you never thought possible! UGH! burning mad

unfornuately, I did not take you advice....I "ran" over there. I am in shock!! I have lost a lot of respect for several posters......oh well, big deal, it's just the internet!!!

People were able to communicate prior to the internet and I do think political discussions were had by actually talking with live people as they still do today. It just seems to me that the days following ones death are to be a little reflective of their life regardless of how many people you can talk to at the same time and how fast. I guess I see that sometimes this era of constant news, information and communication as skipping over common decency at times. I don't think this thread has gone there by any means, I'm just thinking outloud with the keyboard over here.

I went before I checked in here and looked, of course. What is it with everyone's obsession with ERunner??? I mean, when is enough enough. And I really am shocked that some posters over there, whom I regard as sensetive and kind-hearted, can be so...mean!

I'll probably get blasted for saying this but, oh well, as Sue said...it's just the Internet...

I think the disregard for humankind is much greater in the CH then here. I think I'm going to make my bed in the RR forum! Smile

I won't delve into the polical issues of this thread, but I do want to share a thought I have on the "it's just the internet". Yes it is, but a bulletin board like this and CR for that matter are more than a collection of random opinions. Not only do we share this common ground of running, but as the months and years go by, friendships foster and the comaradarie becomes for many a daily part of most every day. For those meeting at races or personal messaging here, the site becomes an avenue no different than a phone call or writing someone a letter.

It's in this vain that I, and that's all I can speak for, look at posts. A flame or an insult is not "just the internet" in what I see, it's a micro-view of you as a person. How you might foster a friendship. How you might be to meet at a race. I know in my church we often talk about "witnessing". That not only applies to religious issues, but really, life in general. Whether you want to believe it or not, this forum is a form of witnessing. For many of us that aren't well travelled, a post is a little glimpse into what issues are important to people in Atlanta or New York or LA or Austin, or what teachers or policemen or programmers or lobbyists think or what life is like at the beach or in the mountains or in Manhatten. Sure we say "it's just the internet", but really, it's more. Much more.

jrjo is right, it it was "just the internet" we wouldn't get so upset over things people say or believe.

And if it was "just the internet" then I'd be a huge loser for spending so much time with you people, and I refuse to consider that concept. Cool

Gotta disagree here just a tad. Having met runners form both CR and RR we've always left whatever our internet opinions were at home on the net. I've never even heard anyone discuss their postings. It's not unlike neighbors having vastly different opinions. We may consider each other odd, but it doesn't stop us from socializing with each other.

So from that standpoint, I do consider it just the internet. Nothing to be taken too seriously.
