It was a tad warm and humid this morning, but cloudy. My goal for this race was to simply run it at a pace that would equate close to a 5-hour marathon pace. A pace that would be a little slower than I want to run next Sunday so as not to stress my legs too much.

I did the first four miles with a group of people from my fall marathon training group that ran Chicago last sunday. I knew they would run easy, so I ran with them. This part of the course was fairly flat. I left them right after the 4 mile aid station.

Between 4 to 6.5 miles the course is quite hilly. The course covered some of the course we have been running since June, so I knew it pretty well. I pushed this part of the race a bit passing lots of people on the hills. I ran this stretch hard but not too hard. The final miles were downhill to flat, so I concentrated on holding an even pace.

The last quarter mile from the finish I could hear a group of people coming up behind me. I hate more than anything to be passed at the finish, so I picked it up. I could hear them picking it up and I realized they wanted to pass me at the end. So I pushed it up pretty hard the final 200 meters. I pulled away from them easily and finished with a chip time of 1:58. I wanted to do it in 1:54:30--but I am not going to quibble over 3 mins and 30 seconds. If I hadn't run the first four miles so slowly I would have easily beat my goal time and I think my legs will thank me next Sunday that I didn't.

Race was sponsored by a local ice cream store. Free ice cream at the finish and I endulged with some cookies and cream.
