Back story...our 19 y.o. daughter is back to living with us while she tries to get back on her feet. She's been jobless for about a month, but as of Monday, she's had 2 jobs. She doesn't have a car right now, so we (mostly Mrs. PH) drives her to and from her jobs. This requires at least 40 miles of just driving daughter back and forth to work each day.

If I were to loan a bike to daughter so that she could ride from job 1 to job 2 (only 4.something miles between the two in broad daylight), I could save 18+ miles of driving for Mrs. PH.

So, Mrs. PH would drive daughter and bike to job 1. Unload bike. After Job 1, daughter could ride from job 1 to job 2 and then after job 2, Mrs. PH or myself could pick up daughter and bike and bring them back home and start the whole thing again.

I haven't run this plan by anyone at home yet.

Not unreasable but probably unrealistic.

What sort of issues would she have at job #2 if she showed up sweaty?

When is the last time that she rode a bike?

If she weren't living at home and still needed the daily transportation, would you be more inclined to taxi her around?

Um John, I hate to play devils advocate but......

Are you NUTS? She isn't taking care of herself, why on earth would she take care of your bike?

Sorry!

I think there's a 2 hr. gap between when job 1 ends and job 2 begins. She'd have time to freshen up.

A leisurely 4-miles won't make her sweat. I don't see any issues at all. Sounds like a good plan. And really, it doesn't even need to be proposed, it can be declared to her that's the way it'll be unless she's ready to buy her own wheels.

You're gonna achieve most unfavorite dad status shortly after bringing this one to the bench.

My take: a 19 year old person has no business asking anyone's help in transporting her. The bike is great for ensuring her independence. Let her figure out how to manage the sweat, clothing, whatever. I'm sure she's more than capable of doing so.

Good Lord I am really thinking like a tri athlete now! My thoughts exactly! Help.me.

If it's a beater bike, I say go for it but likely to be laughed at. Neutral

I think the key to this whole plan is getting Mrs. PH to sign up for the idea. if she agrees, then it doesn't leave much room for negotiation, if she is on the fence, you don't have a prayer.

If it was up to me, she'd be riding to job 1 and from job 1 to job 2.

We all love our kids, but face it, they can drive us nuts...

My instinct would be to give her the beater bike and say "Here's how your getting to work." If she eats crow and rides to job1 and then job2 without complaint, then I would do the drop off and pick up. If she unloads on you...she rides the bike or walks both ways. Time to grow up and have some personal accountability.

Hey... I had to walk a mile to the bus stop...up hill...both ways. Ask MW, she's seen the road.

It's called tough love.
