Sunday. Sunny. Warm.

This is the first year this particular race has been run, so i didn't know what to expect as far as organization or course. I suppose since i've only been running since August that i don't know what to expect for any race, but that's besides the point. Razz

I get to the race about an hour early. All i know is that it is by the courthouse in Chaska. I drove around for a l'il bit and found a road that goes around back...and then i found a big ol sign that says "Alternative Cancer Awareness 5K. Thank you for coming". I decided that was the place.

I get my shirt and my race number. 560. I am convinced that over the years i have been 560 a half dozen times. The girl gives me a safety pin. Singular. One safety pin. I ask for some more. She gives me another. Singular. So now i have two safety pins. Can i have two more so i can have four? "I suppose". I was more amused than anything.

I jog for a mile or so to warm up. For the first time i didn't feel that my warmup would hurt my race. I find out the course, finally. It is out and back on this paved path with a turnaround at a cone. Ready, set, go (i'm not kidding, it was so cute). I try to find my pace and get into a rhythm. I'm always so bad at pace that i can't tell if i'm going too fast or not, especially at the start of a race. I decide to keep doing what i'm doing and just find out where i come out at the mile. I'm next to a gray hair at the mile and it is 7:26. A bit faster than i expected, but i'll deal with it and try to hold on.

After the mile the course starts its uphill section and i start to see runners coming back on the path. I see this young (i'm guessing 11 yrs) red head on the way back. I just knew he'd beat me. I'm not a front runner by any means, but i don't feel as though i'm really back in the pack. It's a comfortable spot, but i start slipping back from the small pack i was with. Gray hair starts pulling away. Since the half mile, i haven't been passed yet. I hit the turnaround cone and start back. Since it was at the end of an uphill, i don't feel that it caused me to lose pace. The uphill and my first mile caused me to lose pace. Razz

Ahhh...midpoint. I start back and i'm falling off my pace, and i am passed for the first time. I hit the second mile at 15:36 and who do i see in front of me walking? The redhead kid. This makes me feel better for some reason, but i tell him "good job" and keep on keeping on. I get passed again (for the second, and last time).

I feel like i'm fading that third mile, and my side is hurting, but at this point i have no idea what pace i'm running. I'm trying to keep pushing, but it's not working as well as it should. I come up to the 3 mile point and the pack i was with at the first mile is still in sight (or just finishing) and i turn the corner for the .1. I'm at 24:03. I finish semi-strong. My watch says 24:53.

If my watch is correct, my average pace was 8:01. Looking at my running log, to go under 8:00 for a 5k, i have to be under 24:51. I'm close, but i still don't know my official. Either way, i just pr'd by about 50 seconds.

Last race i had said that i had nothing left to give at the end. This race i still had a little left in the tank, but i'm not sure when or where i could have applied it during that third mile. The tank was nearing empty, but i could have pushed off 10 seconds somewhere, i'm sure. But when i finished i was hurting and had a brief problem catching my breath.

It was a good race. The miles were well marked and they had someone reading off the split at the first mile. There were volunteers at any place where there could be confusion as to where to go.

When i get my official time and place, i'll post that.

Great race and PR

Pacing takes practice for each distance. Keep up the good work.

a Garmin Forerunner 201 would tell you your pace. Razz

Good job there Pug, also good realization that there is a little in the tank and that you could have dumped a little extra fuel. Each race in a teacher and class never ends. Just remember that for the next race, and so on and so on. Awesome job on the PR. and Punk kids suck, huh? Razz i got my but handed to me on a similiar race byt a 12 y/o. Embarassed

Nice racing Pug!! I think I've ran a race on that course. Seems like it should be flat out there in Chaska, but behold, there is some roll to the land. 50 ticks off the PR is huge improvement. Whatever you're doing, keep it up and you'll be knocking that down all summer long. Very Happy
