In sizing an air conditioner for your home, consider the dimensions of the area to be cooled and how the area is used. Based on size alone, an air conditioner generally needs 20 Btu for each square foot of living space. For instance, to air condition a room that is 15 feet wide and 20 feet long, you would calculate: 15 x 20 x 20(Btu) = 6,000. Thus, an air conditioner with a 6,000 Btu capacity would be required.

Thanks EL
So to use that formula...
12 x 31 x 20 = 7,440
they don't make one that's 7,000 or 8,000, no?

What side of the house is the room on? If it's the north or east sides, you can probably get away with the lighter BTU. West or south and it probably has to work harder.

It's actually the ENTIRE upstairs (it's an old attic restored into a bedroom). It's like a big looooong hallway with two windows on each end. We'd only use it at nights...
We have a 5,000 btu??

It's going to have to work harder on the second floor, no question. Day or night.

I got an 18,000 btu bad boy (the highest possible with 110 power) and it kicks ace. It even has a remote. Got the floor model (no box full warranty) for about 1/2 the list price. Thing's a MONSTER.
You should be able to find an 8k unit, or even a 10k unit and set the thermastat a little higher.

I have to make sure everything else is off, or the circuit breaker pops.
