Isn't it hypocritical that many of the same people from the left that are so opposed to any type of arab racial profiling (in the post 9/11 world) are now coming out against handing over control of the ports to the UAE company?

I don't think people understand just how much of what goes on at ports is outsourced in the first place.

I think you're right. I really don't know much about ports.
I'm all for finding the best price and holding them accountable.
Would love it to be an American company, but if they are all over priced.....
The Halliburton idea still reigns supreme.

You're right. I have no clue.
Though, Sonny, I would be just as uncomfortable if it were a Canadian, Mexican, English, French, Italian, Somali, Nigerian, Vietnamese, Chinese, Isreali (see where I'm going with this?) company.

wrong...why is that any different then UAE corporation (or British corp) running it...
the security of our nation's ports shouldn't be left to corporate control whether it is Halliburton or the proposed UAE corp....
maybe we could just bring home our troops and give that to over to Halliburton as well....

It's very different.
Dubai Ports World is 100 percent owned by the government of the Emirate of Dubai through a Dubai government holding company called the Ports, Customs, and Free Zone Corporation. The government holding company is headed by the ruler of Dubai, Shiek Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
I assume you would want port security run by the US Government?
Edited for bad spelling.

That's the thing. I had no clue. And maybe it doesn't make a difference as this is administration and not security and obviously there isn't an American company to do the job.

Yes, I would prefer that the security of our nation not be outsourced to a corporation or a foreign government holding company...
No matter how you feel about the role of government...one of its primary roles in my view should be the security and defense of the nation and its citizens. In the age we live in, secure ports should be a top priority of the nation and something I believe the U.S. Government should play a chief role in...

This is a very complex issue and I doubt anyone here, myself included, has researched it thoroughly enough to make truly informed commentary. I think people are making knee-jerk reactions to what appears at first glance to be a really bad idea. I'm not real fond of anything middle eastern these days but I'm certainly not jumping to the conclusion that al-queda is going to be patrolling our borders within a couple of years.

So if Kerry/Edwards had announced they favored turning over control of 6 U.S ports to the UAE during the Presidential elections you would have been very supportive? As far as hypocrisy, I think the pot is calling the kettle black here.
Edited to add: I don't know where I stand on this issue. I actually thought Bush made a little bit of sense in his explanation of why he thought the UAE company should be awarded the contract. But it still just seems morally wrong to give a contract designed to make profit for a foreign government from which at least some of the money and support for 9/11 came from.
