Which Canadian holidays are national holidays? Are the following considered a day "off" from work and school?

Victoria Day? on May 23, 2005
Civic Holiday? August 1, 2005

I'm preparing my 2005 work schedule.

for such a peaceful nation, I'm surprised they have a day devoted to bashing each other in the head.

Had Canadian Thanksgiving & Boxing Day, thanks. What about those two mentioned? Should I avoid scheduling things on those days because Canadians will be on holiday?

I'm obviously slacking off around here. Sorry. In answer to your question, no don't book anything on those days. If those are the actual holidays (August 1st is usually a given, but the Victoria day weekend varies depending on what weekend it falls on) then 99% of Cdn's will be off.

Oh and BTW almost all our stores are open on Sunday just like you folks do. We can even buy booze on those days now? We're progressing.

And yes, Thanksgiving is coming up this weekend. Yee haw. Long weekend.

Oh, now I know what you mean. Some very different rules out there. Bars probably still close at 11pm out there. I suppose I shouldn't speak for all of Canada.

Civic holiday? It's a celebration for Honda. We all have access to a Honda Civic and we drive down to the main town in our Civic's, parade around and then finish up with a hockey game and a back bacon festival. Wink

Heck, it's a day off work in the middle of the summer. Why would I question these things?

Quit goofing on me. I am totally serious--what is the Civic Holiday? What are its origins? This is actually a question that has perplexed me for a long time.

Maybe they wanted to avoid the U.S. problem with all the holidays for people - Washington and Lincoln (I know, I know, not any more), King, Columbus,. etc. - and have a generic day saluting all the great Canadians - MacDonald, Gretzky, Dion, etc.

True dat.

He's the answer to the trivia question - who's the only member of the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame whose father is in a sports HoF? His dad is in the Hockey Hall (as a writer/reporter).
