There you go, I didn't know that about Neil Young. His dad played hockey? what an awesome trivia question.
Ok Rex, in answer to your question. The civic holiday is just a day to celebrate the first day of August. It originally began in Toronto, based after a prominent politician John Simco (Simco County) and his civic presence. The other provinces adopted the idea and celebrated their own prominent civilian.
In all honesty, just a day off to celebrate the summer. We're like that. After all that winter we have we need to celebrate warmth.
