I'm considering getting a treadmill in 2 years and want to know about what a new one would cost and possible look at the option of getting a used model.
What features do you like in treadmills? How much was yours? Would you recommend it to a friend or steer them towards another model?

We got a top of the line Nordic Track.
It was over $2,000. We have had it for two years now and never had a single problem with it.
It has incline, keep track of calories burnt, has a pulse reader, and it also has many workout "programs" built into the computer. I do not use these workouts, however.

PH, I don't know prices but I wanted to echo what Coach said about the treadmill. My PT's have had Nordic track mills and they rock. They are very well built and very comfortable to run on. At the club I belong to they have 1 nordic track and a bunch of Star Tracs. The nordic track is far superior IMHO.
2 years that is planning ahead!

I just signed up for a 2nd gym membership that doesn't run out for 2 years. Can't really justify getting one before then.
Side note :: In 2 years, I'll only have one kid living at home.

If you plan on using a treadmill a lot, go with a commercial model as opposed to a home model. Commercial models are actually built to last longer due to the number (and weight) of people using them.
Make sure your treadmill has
at least a 2.0 hp motor (maybe even 2.5 for you)
can go up to at least 10 MPH (for you, probably 12 MPH)
can do both incline and back down at the touch of a button (instead of manually)
the deck is long enough for your stride AND soft enough so as not to hurt.
The other stuff like kcals burned, HR, programs are all 'frivolous' things that you may or may not want. But of course, will cost extra.
A good commercial treadmill - Lifefitness, StarTrac, Nordic, Precor - will cost anywhere from $2500 to $8000.

we have a Precor (9.21) we've had it for about 5 years--had two Nordic trak machines before that but they hadn't gone treadmill yet so we got a Precor. i hate to jinx it, but it's had everyday use and never a problem.
i'd guess we bought the bottom of the line but it still has different hill programs, a heart rate monitor, and the calorie thingy. it was $2300 and paid for itself long time ago, we've both used it tons.

I have an Image and it cost me $1500. It will be 9 years old in December and only had repairs on it once when it was about 7 years old, it was a minor repair and only cost Bam about $50 to fix himself.
I agree with everything Flarunner said, and also make sure you test the one you want. Go to the store and get on the mill you like and do a typical workout. I think it's the best way to find out if you will really like it.

We have a True. Bought it 2 years ago for $2700 and it's been worth every penny. My hubby and I both use it. Its pretty heavy duty has lots of neat gadgets. The store we went to had all their models out so you could test them too. I recommend that as well.

I have a Landice. I bought it because it had a large, quiet motor. I got one without all the built in programs as I have no use for them and kept the cost down to about 2K, if I remember correctly. However, it seems that since I've moved the treadmill it's louder????? I think I'll call to have it looked at before winter comes (and the warranty is up) I found out that Landice now guarantees all parts for life......I think it was only 5 yrs when I bought mine. I talked to the guy not too long ago that owns a equipment place and he says he's serviced only 3 Landice treadmills in 10 years.
sue
edited to add: I do remember when I was shopping that True had top ratings. If I were in the market right now, I would probably take the top 3 picks of consumer reports and test which of the three "feels right" for me.
