<Sahara walks into the vending room with two quarters and a dime to buy the usual mid-afternoon soda. Plinks in the coins, plucks the can from the machine and peruses the morning paper on one of the tables. In walks another woman.>
Sahara: This picture is just too slick. <holding up the front page of the local paper> He looks too perfect. You'd think that the party would muddy him up a little.
Other Woman: Who?
S: Edwards. And I'm a left-thinker too!
OW: <looking at paper> Oh. I'm straight republican. <pause> I hate Heinz-Kerry. She's black now.
S: Wha?
OW: Yeah, she's from South Africa you know.
S: <chuckling, incredulously> well, yes. I knew. She strikes me as a strong woman. I like that.
OW: Well, she's black now.
S: <dumfounded, didn't say a word, looked at her questioningly wondering what the joke was>

<Sahara walks out of the vending room with her Diet Dr. Pepper>
Real life is much much stranger than fiction. I suppose that's what I get for instigating a conversation.
