As if the draft, or a mandatory term service would be the worst thing to ever happen to our country.
Of course, unless we end up in a serious state of extended war, i'm 25. Most selective service drafts have ended at age 27 or 28 (at worst, 30). I'm almost too old for the draft.

Gravenewworld (nifty name, btw): Please don't accept this as a rip on you, or anything, but congress.org isn't congress'ses's'ses website. It's a service (provided by a third party) for folks interested in the goings-on in Congress. Try www.congress.gov, which will forward you to http://thomas.loc.gov -- spin-free tidings.
Although I'm a stinky liberal-minded person, I find much of the content of congress.org slanted and flammable. Snopes.com sums it up the unlikelyness of it all very well.
Peace,

I think the military would be the first to tell you that a draft is a bad idea. Conscripts=very low morale.

That was mentioned in the Snopes rebuttal, even. I think i've heard that a couple of other places. Hard to find a highly motivated soldier when you are forcing him to be there.

Having been in the "draftee Army" in 1972 to 1974, it was absolutely awful !! Discipline, pride in self and in the job you did, appearance, EVERYTHING was super low !!! I was not a draftee, rather I graduated from ROTC and reported for Active duty in March of 1972.
I really did not see a change in the Army until Reagan was elected. We now have some of the best and brightest people in the services. People that WANT to be in the service.
Reality check time...
Fact: Draft boards are still around and viable. Each US State and Territory has a system set up to activate draft boards.
Fact: Even if a draft were passed it would take at least a year for the draft to start. Why ? Well, some things like expanded inprocessing centers have to be in place before the first draftee goes in for their physical. Most important, the "training base" posts, cadre (instructors), and facilities have to be expanded. This cannot happen overnight.
Where will they get the cadre of instructors ? Well, they have to be activated from Reserve Units - THAT itself will take time. Then you have to get uniforms, equipment, trucks, tanks etc etc.
So relax, wait until you hear the debates ACTUALLY start. Then write your elected representative and tell them how you feel.

From what I have been reading, the military is requiring soldiers to continue their service after their time is up, recalling soldiers who have left the military and is using an awful lot of the reservists. This makes it seem like the military is pretty close to maxxed out at present. So, assuming we stay in Iraq until 2006, are we getting enough new soldiers to sign up to replace the soldiers that will be leaving in the next year or so? If so, then no draft. If not, something will have to be done.
Please feel free to correct any misunderstanding in the above statements.
