Posted: 06/05/03 - 20:06 Post subject: ATM Etiquette
I pull up to the drive thru ATM earlier tonight and the car in front of me forgot to take his cash. (60 bux) I beeped my horn and tried to catch up to him, but to no avail. I did everything I could but could not return the money to the owner, so I am keeping it but going to put it aside, just in case.
or should I spend my new found wealth?

kudos to you my friend!
i'm most proud to hear of this karma-do gooder type stuff. because damnit it's the right bloody thing to do. life would be a lot easier if everyone did the right thing.
my atm won't let me have by bankcard back until i have my money. and it won't give me my receipt until i take my card. that way it's pretty flippin' hard to walk away without something.
oh, and as for the cash? well i dunno how you can give it back now. maybe keep twenty for yourself and donate 40$ to the next fundraising kid that knocks on your door?...

Hopefully he will figure it out and have the sense to go to the bank. They do videotape all transactions (or at least they used to do so). I'd take it to the nearest branch and let them deal with it.

his loss. He is probably going to post on a board somewhere about dishonest people in the world. Little does he know the lengths you went through.
No crime Greg though. There was no criminal intent. Keep it aside for a little while otherwise you are good to go.

I wouldn't blame you for keeping it, but Kristin does have a good point. Based on your transaction time, they can find out who made the withdrawl before you and contact the owner.
You did everything you could. so keep it if you wish!

I'd say it is possible to find out from your bank who it belongs to, based on your transaction number and time. So should you want to go through with all that, it seems to be a possibility. give your bank a call and see what they say. they may decide it isn't worth the hassle, and then you're up $60

I'm sure the bank that owns the ATM will have a record of who made a withdrawl right before you. Let them handle it.

If it were me, I'd keep the dough and blow it on and .
But an honest person would contact the bank, who as PH says, definite records on who was in line before you.

My rule of thumb is that if there's any reasonable way to get the money back to the person, which in this case there is, do it. The bank will be able to determine who it is that lost the money and get it back to them.
I know how I'd feel if I was suddenly out $60. It wouldn't break me but I'd sure be bummed. Imagine how you'll make that persons day when they find out there is an extremely honest person out there who went to the lengths you did to return their money.

he was probably talking on his cell phone (we've had a few people drive off in the drivethru without their coffees... or change for that matter...)

Just this morning I stopped by my ATM...got $40 bucks (for crack), got my receipt...the screen told me to 'take my card'...the only problem was that it wasn't offering it up! I sat there...cried some...and went into the bank throwing fists!!!
Ok, maybe not. But I've never had that happen before. Apparently they'll send out someone later today to 'find' my card.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.......
