Was my hemoglobin today when I tried to give blood at my school's blood drive. For reference, the blood bank won't allow you to give below 12 g/dl, as normal for a woman is 12-16. In the hospital, doctors will transfuse for 8 or 9... And again, I was a 7.6 g/dl. I made an appt there to see my doctor tomorrow. I don't feel bad but thats a little concerning...

It could be genetic, my mom and sister have a genetic form of anemia I've never been tested for. I had a physical today where they tested for everything, so we'll see what turns up...

mine too and because 12 is in range, doctor's don't make a big deal out of it. Next time you get a blood draw ask for a ferritin reading also, it will give a better picture. In fact, I posted this question in mainstream running on coolrunning.com because I wasn't sure how to interpret my low ferritin level. Someone gave me a link that was very informative on why ferritin reading is very important. The rate of injuries when ferritin is low is extremely high.

ps: if you start supplementing with iron, don't take it with other multivitamins.....esp Calcium. Calcium inhibits absorption.
