Hey all! It's my first Running Forums race report, so exciting. OK the race!
The race was a fubby kind of an event, the whole thing from start to finish. I was a bit disappointed with my speed, expected to be a minute faster, but am learning lessons. Anyway, like I said it started out fun. The event was chalk full of h.s. and college runners. I go up to register, right, and the volunteer says to me (LOL!): h.s. division right? I'm 29 and usually don't get carded anymore, so I start to laugh, turn to my hubby, and say: have 4 dollars Daddy O, so I can race? My hubby is cracking up, takes out the money, and says: here you go, Lolita. The volunteer thought we were insane, but it seemed to help my nerves, joking. I was way too nervous for this race, being the first one since fall and wanting to break my old PR.
So, it's time to race. They say a short prayer and the gun goes off. The weather was ok, but windy: 22 degrees with winds reported between 20 and 40... 40 didn't happen until that night, though. Anyway, ack, R.B. you're right, those hills will eat you up during a race if you don't do hill work. So, yes, the hills once again got the better of me, slowing me down. The first mile, I thought I was pretty slow because so many women were passing me. I didn't realize how many kids were running the race. Anyway, first mile was 7:37:14, there wasn't a mile marker for the 2nd mile. But during the 2nd mile this young woman, who I was guessing was in college but turns out h.s. and who was running w/ a fast dude who seemed to be pacing her at a much to fast pace...poor girl, stops to ralph all over the place. Anyway, she became significant because she and her dude got back into the race after the ralphing incident and ran along side me...and she smelled SO bad. I wanted to hurl. It was just gross.
So, I'm close to the finish line, I see the clock, and I'm screaming to myself: GOD NO! because around 8 months ago I ran a 5K at 25:06 and the clock was at 24:55. I so didn't want to tie that time. I didn't. Only 6 seconds faster, but I promised hubby no bitching if I came in under 25:06, so I quietly mumbled all the way home about the 25:00 finish.

THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKIN ABOUT!
Taking home the silver medal.. all right!
High school & college speedsters bite, I know what you mean. Don't beat your head against the wall too much. 22F degrees and windy is by no means PR weather..which you did anyway Decent weather would be worth at least a minute... at least!

Nothing like the smell of a little vomit in the air to make you pick up the pace a bit eh? Good job..............

Cool thing about your age , at least you were not in the "younger" age group you would not have placed.

Hey, great job, Shel!!! Anytime you can PR is great, but when you can do it under such conditions (cold and stenchy), that is an incredible accomplishment. And ya gotta love hardware!!!
