Posted: 03/03/04 - 12:08 Post subject: 4th grade assessment results
Some of you may remember my problems at the beginning of the year....as my son's teacher had "issues" with his abilities--or lack of.
(he doesn't write cursively and he's a terrible, terrible speller)
His results of the Wisconsin Student Assessment
Reading--- Advanced (told you so....teacher rolled her eyes when I told her I felt he was advanced....she remarked "more like average)
Language Arts-- Proficient. Smack in the middle. I'm surprised, this "is" his weak area, afterall
Mathematics--Advanced. No surprise for anyone
Science--Proficient....but at the high end
Social Studies-- Advanced.
To give her (teacher) some credit, she has told me that he has made wonderful progress. Maybe we live in a tough district....because if you saw his report card, you'd think they assessed the wrong child on this test.
I guess I can rest a little better and abide by my son's previous teacher: handwriting is overated--who uses it and there are ALOT of poor spellers in the world that's what spellcheck and dictionaries are for.
I think he's going to be okay

Good for the little guy Sue. My son, who is now in 8th grade, still has horrendous cursive writing skills and his spelling isn't too hot. He gets average reading grades yet will sit there and read technical articles in his ATV magazines and fully comprehend them with no problem. His mechanical aptitude amazes me and I'm a total gearhead. Anyways, despite very average grades he scored above average on all his state mandated exams so I think he's going to be okay too.

This is awesome news Sue!
I know that you must be happy with this!
Handwriting does not determine how intelligent you are for sure.
Obviously, he's not "lacking" in any abilities.
This is a great update!

Who writes cursive anywhere?
I am 31 and I can't write cursive. Signing my name is almost like making my mark. I work in an industry where we aren't even suppose to use lower case letter and everything should be blocked.
It sounds to me like you have a young engineer on your hands! get that kid a 101 science kit and prepare to reset your circuit breakers.

You've got a smart cookie there, Sue. Good for him! Does he get something unexpected in a package for this?

Great results! And just for the record, this teacher can't spell or write legibly. (I blame it on computers)

Just goes to show that you should never take a teacher's word as gospel. Way to go, Sue's boy!
