Posted: 12/25/06 - 12:52 Post subject: 3 Miler to 5 Miler
I'm considering registering for a 5 Mile race on February 11th.
My most recent was was on November 23, with a time of 31:16 on a somewhat fast 3 mile course.
Since then, I've taken sort of a running break for the last month, only doing one two mile run a week.
I have no doubt that I could do a five mile race, in fact, it's been my newest goal, to train for a 5M or 10K. But I have to slow down to walk during a 5K, so I'd undoubtedly have to on the longer race. The unfortunate thing is that the course closes on a 13min/mile pace and I'm not sure I could keep my pace for that long.
I plan on stepping up my training big time, to about the level I was at before the 3M and making a decision a few days before the registration deadline. But am I trying for too much, am I just heading towards an injury trying the longer race so soon?

Run 4 miles alot beforehand. I don't see how you could run a 13 minute mile, unless you have just started running. I'm sure that after maybe 6 succesful four mile runs you could finish a five miler. And you don't need to take month long breaks, if you thought that, unless it's a very very hard race, or a half or full marathon.
