Oh heck, I think that 26 was just about the time of my first race back in '80, 'cept it was 2-miler! Last place too. When I was a senior I had the letterman's banquet rolling in laughter retelling the story of this race. The kid that was one place ahead of me would be crying and puking alongside the trail (it was a xc race) and as I'd chug up to him, he'd take off like a bat outta hell until he was around a corner outta sight. Then a minute later, I'd catch up to him cryin' and yackin' again. Same thing a dozen times. But I couldn't beat him. Competitive snot in me was born sometime after that though. Seven years later I posted a 5-mile time in nearly the same as that 2-miler.

OK, according to my calculations if you run a 5k in 15 min (which is FAST) and a marathon is 42k and you need to run it in about 2:30 (probably less) in order to win you would have to run the ENTIRE marathon at really fast 5k pace? Who can do this?

The current world record holder for the marathon can run the entire marathon at a faster pace than I can run 1/2 a mile.

That's not right. Those people should be put in a lab and biopsied for alien tissue or something.

Who can do this? | Here in the US to qualify for the Olympic marathon trial for men, it takes better than a 2:22 marathon. For the last marathon trial there were 104 men. So far over the last 18-mos, 51 guys have made the mark for the next trials.
But in certain parts of Kenya, it seems every other guy can bust a 2:22 barely breaking a sweat.

All I will say is that it was longer than an episode of Spongebob including beginning song and ending credits. It was a 5K.

Side question: When you talk about your race times do you go by
chip time or gun time?
