Sadly the death count number is going to go up. There are so many people unaccounted for. Also to add that disease is going to be widespread as well with the standing water, dead bodies/animals, etc.
Why they didn't have a warning system in place where this is most common??
| Quote: | No warning
The tsunamis struck with no warning to those in coastal areas -- particularly Indonesia, so close to the source -- as no warning system exists for the Indian Ocean, said Eddie Bernard, director of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Pacific Marine and Environmental Labs in Seattle.

That's pretty crazy stuff. I wish I'd have bought a paper so I could read more about it.

I'm reading this as not so much a news story but that you are shocked this wasn't mentioned as a thread, even though Reggie White's death was? No?
I think anyone can start a thread about mostly whatever they want. You were welcome to start this. I personally didn't start a thread about it as A) its the lead story on the news, so posting a story about it is going to be redundant to most, and B) I find it inconceivably devastating that I have no thoughts really to add. Very shocking indeed. and C) usually its the fubby threads people want around here, as most of us use this as an escape from our serious and seriously disturbed jobs. That said, I don't find it inappropriate to post this or any other major headline, but I had no reason TO post it.

I thought it was because Reggie White was A) American and B) a Professional Athlete.
Just kidding.... actually, that would likely be something in the On Topic section since nobody probably wants to make fubby jokes about it.
Trivial crap goes in this part of the forums.

RW's death was fubby?

All the money in the world won't bring those people back to life. Not to mention the sick, the injured and the worst, the survivors that now have to deal with the devistation and fear of another.
PLEASE don't mind me.... I'm really shaken about this whole thing.
22,000 and the death toll is just starting to be counted. I'm overwhelmed and shocked. After the 2nd hurricane I thought what I was going through was tough, ya know not having ice cream and stuff for a week, but these people are.... I'm lost.

Nate Berkus (the home designer from Oprah) was there and survived. The person he was traveling with has not been found. He was actually swept into the water and was able to grab on to something until rescued.
I like Nate and when he's on Oprah.

I also think Reggie's death may have touched some of us more personally, whether that sounds cold or not, because he played for Philly for a number of years (where many of us are from) and for Green Bay as well (where many other of us are either from or fans of) so whether anyone here actually "knew" him or not, he was a familiar face and someone we could relate to on a more personal level. Just my take on it, but like pffff said, I thought the same thing, it was headline news and there really wasn't anything else I could say other than what a tragedy it was.
Perhaps you understand this tragedy because you've been through somewhat similar conditions (and fortunately survived them) and so this relates more personally to you, no? Just a guess.

As for 1:12 p.m. EST on 12/27, the body count is up over 23,000.

You know, I'd seen this everywhere else, so I just took it for granted that it was already here. No offense intended.
