Will you "tie one on for safety" with a red ribbon somewhere on your vehicle and pledge to drive completely sober this holiday season?

We can gripe for hours on end about Iraq, mad cow disease or Guantanamo Bay but in my mind it all pales in comparison to 17,000 senseless deaths. 17,000. Sad

Will do.

I think everyone here knows my affection for beer, but I firmly believe we should be responsible about it.

I think this is much more effective than MADD's other projects. I always drive sober and this season will be no exception.

While I enjoy my tasty adult beverages, I do not drive while under the influence either. I would, however, like to know where MADD gets the statistic that it saved 270,000 lives. How does one quantify something like that?

With non-profit programs like that, there's a bit of extrapolating to get figures. I'm sure they take some statistics in communities before and after a program is held for instance and then take the decrease in fatalities as 'a result' of conducting the program. Of course, it's likely a soft number because there are probably 49 variables in whether someone decides to not drive when drunk on a given night, but the logic is all those variables likely stay stagnant and the MADD program is the only 'new' influence in the mix.

I know a number of us here are involved in a lot of non-profits and one big challenge is getting statistics out of 'social impact'. It is difficult. But even though numbers are soft, it's about as close as anybody can get.

This is one of my hot buttons in life, so I tend to be quiet about it because I can't be rational.

There is never a reason to drive drunk. period.

I was almost killed by a drunk driver when I was 6.

I was sitting at the corner of the street, on my big wheels (how's that for a thread cross-reference), my uncle was walking along side me. This guy took the corner too fast, and was headed right for me.

I dove off the big wheels and he drove right up over the top of it, plowed through a fence, and hit the house. My Uncle couldn't look. He thought I'd been killed.

It was so close that there were metal splinters on the bumper that caught my knee and cut me. I figure he missed me by about 1/8-1/4 of an inch.

Needless to say, I don't drive after I've had anything to drink.

I have seen too many affects of DUI. That is why I am glad our department is one of the top in the county and state in DUI arrests.

Curious as to what percentage of the deaths were the actual drunk drivers and not innocent victims?

more of the passengers or other vehicle's people die, than the drivers. for some reason the drivers live more. I have no stats on that, just experience.

I would think it is because most vehicles are pretty safe for frontal impact, yet very susceptible to side impacts. With the drunk, pretty much anything he hits, including the sides of other cars, will be frontal impact. Just one reason at least.
