Posted: 03/21/04 - 18:30 Post subject: 10 weeks to first Marathon. And a tour announcement.
(note to the reader: As you will readily notice, this is solely my own observations and handiwork, without input, etc., from LC or Coach. So there.)
Well, by my reckoning, in ten weeks, I will be running Mad City. Eight weeks ago I started training this for real. The times, distances, splits, etc., can speak for themselves... but what have I learned since early February?
1 - I am not self-destucting on hills. While I am not yet a master of them, we are coming to an understanding. On long runs, and short ones that have them, the miles containing hills are no longer my slowest ones.
2 - Cross-training is not my friend - especially when it comes to weight lifting. The further up you go on my body, the worse it gets. There is a rumor that my arms have biceps that occasionally make a guest appearance. But I am too embarrassed to mention here what I can do on arm curls.
3 - My stamina in some aspects is pleasantly surprising. I thought a huge problem would be the inclination to breathe through my mouth. Not so - and it has been very simple to maintain a good inhale and exhale rhythm. I have been very fortunate to have no injuries that would affect my running. Just a few black toenails. And even the knee I twisted at the airport yesterday did not bother me on today's 14-mile run.
My big concern right now is I seem to be leveling at my pace - not being able to lower it. I realize this could be par for the course. And I realize I have had God-awful weather to run in. Nonetheless, this is the thing that concerns me the most. It's just running, so what's the point in worrying about it?
Enough of the analysis (?). With some race people sending their material, I can happily announce this year's tour, or at least a part of it. Since a Radiohead song served as a good title for a good year in '03, I figure, why not another in 2004. So, I bring you some of the In Limbo Tour 2004:
April 3 - Spirit of St Louis half-marathon (St Louis MO)
April 17 - Hatten Park Runs (New London WI)
April 25 - Making Great Strides trail half-marathon (inaugural) (Libertyville IL)
May 30 - Mad City Marathon (Madison WI)
June 21* - Fish Day 8K (Port Washington WI)
September 26 - Quad Cities Marathon (Moline IL/Davenport IA)
November 25 - Tim Plum 5K/10K (Lake Forest IL)
* - tentative date. As you can see - loads of open space - need to fill some of it in!
And, as in last year, the song (more descriptive of my approach to running )
Lundy, Fastnet, Irish Sea
I got a message I can't read
Another message I can't read
Being the first in the Irish Sea
I got a message I can't read
Another message I can't read
I'm on your side
Nowhere to hide
Trapdoors that open
I spiral down
You're living in a fantasy world
You're living in a fantasy world
I'm lost at sea
Don't bother me
I've lost my way
I've lost my way
You're living in a fantasy world
You're living in a fantasy world
You're living in a fantasy world
This beautiful world
Lundy, Fastnet, Irish Sea
I got a message I can't read
Another message I can't read
